Tak Chee House, Northbridge

After looking for an authentic Malaysian restaurant in Perth to try out we stumbled across Tak Chee House and decided to give it a go. It is located among other Asian restaurants in Perth and can be easy to miss but boy was it busy for a Sunday night. It looked like a simple cafe but it was clean, the waitresses were friendly and it was affordable. However, this place is cash only.

We ordered Teh Tarik for our drinks, one hot and the other cold. The cold one was much better than the hot one. The hot one wasn't frothy and it also was a bit lumpy as it wasn't mixed well. The cold one didn't seem to have this problem.

 Chicken Satay

The satay was cooked well. It was a bit thicker than normal but then again it makes up for the quantity as you get four per serve. You also get two slices of cucumber which I thought was a bit scarce but better than none I suppose. It was came with a peanut sauce which was light and smooth and you could taste the peanuts.

 Beef  Curry with Roti Canai

The beef curry gravy was much thicker than the chicken curry below as the bases were different. Both contained potatoes and one piece of Roti Canai, but we ordered an extra one each. The beef curry had a nice mix of spices and it was a little bit spicy but not too much. The Roti was light and crispy and had a touch of sweetness to it. The Roti was much nicer than the other ones that I have tried compared to Indian restaurants based in Perth but the technique used to make them is different.

Chicken Curry with Roti Canai

The chicken curry was lighter than the beef curry and I found both servings to be substantial. The chicken curry had a stronger coconut flavour to it and it was authentic.

Ais Kacang

For dessert we shared the Ais Kacang and we were pretty full by then so it was more than enough. They give you seperate serving bowls and spoons for each person as well. It is flavoured with rose syrup and contained grass jelly, red bean, raisins and some corn. It was really refreshing and a good way to end the night.

Utopia (Karaoke), Northbridge

This place is centralised and is located in the heart of Northbridge. It is comparable to the Utopia located just downstairs which is much smaller in size but good if you're on the go for a quick bubble tea. However, the one upstairs is much larger, sells food and beverages, contains private karaoke rooms and has plasma screen TV's displaying music videos (usually of another language) and large projector screens which are usually off unless there's an event on. The only downfall is the parking as with anywhere else in Northbridge. They also sell a number of desserts and cakes. A good representation of another Utopia stall chain.

Chime Restaurant at Hotel Northbridge, Northbridge

This restaurant is located at the front of Hotel Northbridge. We came here for lunch on Saturday and were the only customers. The tables were nicely set out and the area was quite spacious. For entrĂ©es, we had the Tasting Plate which came with a variety of condiments and was filling enough between a group of four.

For the mains I had the Herb Crusted Lamb Rack however, this wasn't as good as I was hoping and each lamb cutlet had a layer of fat around it so there wasn't as much meat as I expected but overall it was cooked well. However, my partner had the Premium Sirloin which was tasty and substantial which I would recommend.

Dragon Palace & Karaoke Restaurant, Northbridge

This place is especially busy on Sunday during Dim Sum. There are normally herds of people waiting around at the front of the restaurant waiting for their number to be called over the loud speaker which can be heard down the street. There is a slight sense of disorganisation when I come here but I believe that it is worth the wait and it's a very large restaurant with an upstairs and downstairs area and there are provisions for karaoke.

If you go early then you have a better chance at getting a table sooner as you need to get a ticket and wait for your number to be called. This is especially so if you come with a large group.

The Dim Sum is good and fresh but normally comes in threes, so it's good to go in multiples of three. Also some of the same food normally comes around a few times so if you want a speciality dish or something different then you need to request it.

For dinner, there is an extensive range of dishes which are of high quality and are categorised based on the type of meat or vegetable. I am never disappointed when I come here.

Hog's Breath Cafe, Northbridge

For dinner I had the Garlic Mushroom Prime Rib (Traditional Cut $32.95 / Lite Cut $25.95) and it was full of saturated fat and so was everyone else's steaks. The place was dark and the steaks were covered in sauce so by the time you ate it you would get a mouth full of fat.

However, the Chicken Parmigiana ($22.95) during lunch was not too bad (chicken breast schnitzel topped with an Italian style tomato sauce and shaved parmesan cheese, Hog Tail Fries and salad). The Hog Tail Fries goes well with sweet chilli and ranch dipping sauce.

For dessert, the Strawberry Pavlova ($7.95) (filled with whipped cream and came with sliced strawberries, vanilla ice cream and strawberry sauce) was really nice and light. The cocktails are not too bad but you can't order cocktails or alcohol unless you have a main meal which I think is a bit unreasonable. This is due to their licensing requirements and they will watch you like a hawk if you try to order alcohol without a main meal.
