Munch Terrace, East Perth

This place has been one of my favorite places to regular for lunches during work days. Available as both take-away and dine-in, this place is a great place for Malaysian food.

The place is cash-only. I am known for turning back at restaurants which do not offer payment via credit card; however, this place is one exception. I would always have take-away and the waiting time is not disappointing at all. You are guaranteed to have your meal within 5 minutes of waiting.

Nasi Goreng with Sambal Sauce is one of the best I have had. If you can't handle spicy food, I would not recommend you ordering Nasi Goreng (Spicy); just ask for Nasi Goreng.

Ararat Kebabs, Nedlands

Family owned Ararat Kebas is undoubtedly one of the best take-away and dine-in places in the Broadway Shopping Complex. They are open almost daily until 22:00 hrs.

The most popular take-away food is kebabs. Doner kebabs with garlic sauce are the best that I have tried. It has always been the best place for Kebabs during university days. You can have steak or chicken; and also double the meat amount if you want.

Pide (pronounced 'peeday') are also one of my favorites. I believe the most sold and the best flavored pide is Kusbasi. The Turkish word translates to meat cut into morsel sized pieces. You have the option to ask for spicy or non-spicy. I would recommend getting the spicy version. They also have Turkish salami pide.

The next type of food that I cannot ignore is the ever popular Turkish bread that best goes with a meat tray. You should also get the usual dips to eat with it.

They also have burgers just like in any other take-away place but I have't tried them because I always thrive to try out different food.

Talking about desserts, there is Turkish delight. Never forget Baklava which, in my opinion, the best baklava in town.

Pastacup, Canning Vale

What could me better than freshly made pasta by hand? There is an option to pick a size, sauce and pasta. There are also specials, combos and mains available. This place has great tasting pasta and when purchased as a take-away meal it comes in a cardboard box of varying sizes. The dough is put through a machine when you choose which pasta you want. There are samples of the pasta at the counter from which you can choose from. The are different sizes for meals:
  • Small $11.45
  • Regular $13.45
  • Large $15.45
  • Family Size $29.95
  • Kiddies $5.95

I had the beef lasagne as a take-away meal and the pasta was cooked al dente and there was a substantial amount of minced meat however, I was considering of asking for extra sauce in the future as the meat flavours overrode the sauce for my liking. However, the sauce was really nice and fresh and had the right amount of salt unlike other lasagne's that I have tried. The family size box is very large and would be enough to feed two to three people.

On the other hand, I was not particularly keen on the cannelloni which was quite dry and the ingredients seemed like they were over processed, I will not be trying this one again. This time round the pasta was slightly undercooked.

As for my dining-in experience, this was not so enjoyable. None of the tables are cleared until a new customer is seated and awaiting for their dish to arrive therefore, the tables were cleaned as you waited. All the surrounding tables contained dirty dishes which was unappealing. When we had left we were the only customers and the tables still had not been cleared. We received two pieces of complimentary sour dough bread and a small container of parmesan cheese. I tried The Angry Sausage one with Fusilli and the other with Chilli Fusilli pasta. The pasta was slightly undercooked in both dishes. The dish with Fusilli lacked sauce and was a bit plain. The dish with Chilli Fusilli was quite heavy, spicy and contained more sauce. The Chilli Fuslli seemed thicker than the standard Fusilli. We struggled to finish our dishes and felt full.

Although I have mixed experiences with this place, I will be back and could see this place as a regular take-out joint as a healthy alternative comparable to other take-away places or even as a casual dining in experience. It comes down to who the cooks are on the night and what you order.

 Family Size $29.95 (Take-away)
Family Size - Special of the day - Two combination's (Take-away)
Beef lasagne (Take-away) $13.45

Complimentary sour dough bread and parmesan cheese
The Angry Sausage with Fusilli pasta $13.45
The Angry Sausage with Chilli Fusilli pasta $13.45

Roman Palace Italian Restaurant, Cannington

This place has wonderful ambience and a unique water feature in the middle of the restaurant. I always feel at home here because it is a family owned Italian business with wonderful owners who are very friendly and welcoming. It's a good place to go to when you're out for a peaceful dining experience with your family and also for an enjoyable take-away meal.

For entrées the Pane Con Aglio (toasted garlic bread) or Bruschetta (toasted Italian bread with tomato, basil & olive oil) is nice and light. For pasta I can recommend the Lasagne Al Forno (lasagna with three cheeses & meat sauce), Spaghetti Con Polpette (pasta with olive oil, fresh parsley, tomato & meatballs)  and Penne Pollo (pasta with chicken, sundried tomato, mushroom, broccoli & a creamy white sauce). I normally order these meals as take-away meals which are very substantial with rich flavours that are accentuated through the sauce. The pasta is always cooked al dente.

During my dining experiences I always go for the Zampi Di Agnello (roasted lamb shanks with a port & shiraz sauce). They provide two very large lamb shanks and the meat is tender and falls off the bone quite nicely. However, the Bistecca Alla Diavola (aged scotch fillet with a fiery black pepper sauce) is a winner too and cooked well.

Most meals come with a bit of a side salad similar to the Greek Salad (a chunky salad with fetta, olives, cucumber, capsicum, tomato & red onion). If you're keen for a bit more then it may be good to order an extra salad to share.

They do provide desserts however, they vary from time to time which are okay. This place is value for money and I highly recommend coming here and bring your friends and family too as it has a family oriented culture and feel to it. Also with the spacious design it is ideal for large functions or gatherings.

DINNER : Tuesday - Sunday: Open from 5:00 pm
LUNCH : Friday: Open from 11:30am - 2:30 pm
Monday - Closed

Maya Masala, Stockland Riverton

This restaurant is not overly large and is very open to the outside seating area. It is located at the front of Stockland Riverton Shopping Centre. There is a wide selection of curries available which can be seen from the bain-marie. The owner is very helpful in describing the spiciness of the curries. It is a good place to go to if you're hungry and feel like a substantial meal.

I can highly recommend the Chicken Dosa. You need to pre-order this dish as it's freshly made. It also comes with a yoghurt dipping sauce and vegetarian curry on the side. The Masala Dosa is also great for a vegetarian option which is filled with potatoes, onion, curry leaves and mustard seeds. You will not be disappointed!

Kahmon, Shelley

The first time I heard about this place was when it first opened from someone who is Japanese claiming that this was the only place that sold authentic Japanese food in Perth. This a cafe style restaurant similar to the one in Applecross called Ohnamiya as it used to be a franchise which are now independant http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/338/1446964/restaurant/Perth/Melville/Ohnamiya-Japanese-Takeaway-Dine-In-Applecross.

The food has always lived up to my expectations its clean, fresh, tasty but service is abrupt however, the wife is very friendly. The place is owned by a Japanese couple. You can dine in as well and they open at 12pm to 2pm Tuesday to Saturday for lunch. For dinner they open at 5.00pm to 8.30pm Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and 5pm to 9pm Friday and Saturday (not open on Mondays). If it's your first time trying the place have a look at the takeaway menu below, so that you can just call up to order and you normally only have to wait 15 minutes (for 1 - 2 meals) so you get it right away as soon as you arrive or you can order at the counter. The food is healthy and substantial which is why I always go back for more. My favourites are the Katsudon (Chicken Katsu with an omlette and rice) and Chicken Udon Noodle Soup.

Also my favourites are the Chicken Katsu, Chicken Teriyaki, Fish Teriyaki or Beef Teriyaki which you need to buy in the set where "A set bento box" (is good for a quick meal which comes with half a tray of rice and a bit of salad plus your chosen main meal) or you can get the "D set bento box" (which comes with one serve of Chicken Katsu, two pieces of sushi, two tofu, an egg and a whole tray of rice and a bit of salad plus your chosen main meal). I also like the Curry Chicken Katsu and the Karaage Chicken. Also get the Miso Soup with your meal while you're at it! The only thing is that the salad portion is small so I normally order a extra salad dish in addition to my meal.

Café Noël, Shelley

The restaurant provides as range of dishes that are primarily Japanese and Korean based. You can dine-in where there is a home-made artwork of the Mona Lisa on display made out of coffee beans which is unique.

On the other hand, take-away dishes have also been great and consistent where the food is filling and tasty. I have tried dishes such as the Chicken Udon Noodles for something on the lighter side. Otherwise, for something more substantial the Noel Beef and Noodles is a good option that comes with miso soup and salad

If you want great food and you're on the run then try out this place for good food and service.

Yuki Japanese Restaurant, Willetton

This place is a real gem, the food and service is always great and it has a really good Japanese feel to it. This place is definitely value for money. One of my best local restaurants South of the River.

Entrées: The entrées here are just the right portion and larger than most other Japanese restaurants around Perth. For entrées the mixed Sashimi is good and fresh. It's enough for two (9 pieces) to three people (12 pieces) and great if you want to try a variety of Sashimi. The Agedashi Tofu is a nice warm entrée and the Beef Tataki is consistent in quality.

Mains: The mains are very filling and when you purchase the 'set' it comes with a bowl of rice, miso soup and salad. For the mains I prefer the Teppan Yaki which is my favourite, I normally go with the the beef. The food comes sizzling on a hot plate with large potato wedges on the side. I don't like the sauce on the Beef Teriyaki as much though. However, the sauce on the Fish Teriyaki is nice and compliments the meat more.

The Udon Noodles with beef smells pleasant with the seasoning used which really compliments the flavours and there is a substantial amount of udon noodles which I was unable to finish. There was enough pieces of beef in proportion to the noodles.

Dessert:
For dessert you have to go with the green tea ice cream with a dollop of red bean, which my partner claims is the best! I wish the ice cream scoop was bigger though.

Entrées

 Mixed sashimi (9 pieces) $13.20
 Mixed sashimi (15 pieces) $20.80

Mains

 Beef Tempanyaki $23.20
Udon Noodles with Beef $12.90
Chicken Katsu Curry $13.50

Dessert

Green Tea Ice-Cream (with a dollop of red bean)

Drinks

 Green Tea
Saké (Small)

Hygiene

Combined with the excellent dining experience, what’s almost as important is the personal hygiene. Props need to be given when it is due. Unlike most other restaurants I have seen, this restaurant does not dilute the liquid soap they provide in the toilets. So much can be told about the owner and the management just by this little act.
